Playing a pivotal role in PSG’s treble triumph, the Italian goalkeeper has won the Best Goalkeeper award for the second time.
Although his stint with PSG didn’t end on a high note, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s exceptional season with the French club earned him a prestigious accolade. He became only the second footballer to win the Best Goalkeeper award, the “Yashin Trophy,” twice.
French magazine ‘France Football’ announced Donnarumma as the Best Goalkeeper on Monday at a glittering award ceremony in Paris.
The Yashin Trophy has been awarded since 2019. The first winner was Brazil’s Alisson. Donnarumma claimed his first Yashin Trophy a year later. Now at 26, the towering goalkeeper playing for Manchester City has lifted the award for the second time.
In the past two years, Aston Villa’s Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez had taken home the trophy. Until now, no one besides him had managed to win it multiple times. Donnarumma has now joined him, after playing a key role in PSG’s long-awaited Champions League victory last season. He also helped the French club win Ligue 1, the French Cup, and the French Super Cup.
In women’s football, the Best Goalkeeper award went to Hannah Hampton of England, who was part of the team that won the Women’s Euro.
