According to Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s young midfielder has made the right decision by undergoing knee surgery.
Flick welcomed Gavi’s choice to have surgery to fully recover from his injury. Although this will keep the player sidelined for an extended period, the Barcelona coach believes it will ultimately be positive for his career.
The 21-year-old underwent surgery on the medial meniscus of his right knee. Barcelona, the La Liga champions, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that Gavi will need four to five months to recover fully.
Previously, Gavi had suffered an ACL injury in the same knee, keeping him out of action for 11 months. As a result, he missed a large part of the 2023–24 season and the early stages of last season.
After recovering, Gavi played 26 La Liga matches for Barcelona, contributing one goal and one assist.
This season, he featured in Barcelona’s first two La Liga matches but injured his knee again during training in August, necessitating surgery.
Barcelona will play Real Oviedo on Thursday. At a press conference the day before, German coach Hansi Flick shared his thoughts on Gavi’s absence.
“When you hear news like this, the first thought is, ‘This is bad news,’ but personally, it’s a good thing for him (Gavi). And now we also know what needs to be done,” Flick said.
“He is 21 years old and has a long career ahead. We have to think about keeping him 100% fit. He needs to be a professional player and work hard.”
Barcelona sit second in La Liga with 13 points from five matches—four wins and one draw—just behind Real Madrid, who top the table with 18 points after one extra game.
