Atlético Madrid 5 – 2 Real Madrid
La Liga’s record champions extended their winless run against city rivals as Atlético Madrid claimed a thrilling victory at the Wanda Metropolitano.
From the first touch, the intensity spilled onto the pitch. Real Madrid scored early, and within 11 minutes, Kylian Mbappé and Arda Güler had put Los Blancos ahead. But under relentless pressure, Xabi Alonso’s side soon lost control, allowing Diego Simeone’s team to produce a commanding and exciting comeback.
Atlético Madrid defeated Real 5-2 on Saturday in La Liga, handing Madrid their first defeat of the season.
After falling behind to a goal from Hobán Lu Nohman, Real took the lead through strikes by Mbappé and Güler. However, Aleksander Sørloth restored parity just before halftime. In the second half, Atlético, applying constant pressure, scored twice through Julián Álvarez, with Antoine Griezmann adding the fifth.
Although Real dominated possession at times, they struggled to convert opportunities. Of their six shots, only two were on target. Atlético, meanwhile, had 13 shots, seven of which tested the goalkeeper.
In a single match, Real Madrid conceded five goals, having let in only three in their first six games. This loss also raised concerns over their position atop the league table.
After seven matches, Real remains first with 18 points from six wins, while Barcelona sits second with 16 points, having played one match fewer. Atlético Madrid climbed to fifth with 12 points from three wins and three draws in seven games.
Atlético could have taken the lead within three minutes, when Sørloth entered the box and headed toward goal, only for Militao to make a crucial last-ditch tackle.
The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute when Héban Lu Nohman headed in a cross from Giuliano Simeone, maintaining Atlético’s streak of scoring first in every league match this season.
Real responded in the 25th minute: Mbappé sprinted forward after a pass to Güler and, receiving a return pass in the box, finished past the goalkeeper. This marked Mbappé’s third consecutive game scoring in La Liga and fourth across all competitions, bringing his league tally to eight goals, ten in total.
Just before halftime, Güler extended Real’s lead with a powerful shot after cutting inside from the left and evading defenders. Known as “Turkey’s Messi,” this was his third goal of the season.
Atlético hit back late in the first half: Clément Lenglet’s goal was disallowed by VAR for handball, but Sørloth’s header in added time restored parity.
The second half belonged to Atlético. In the 49th minute, a foul by Nico González in the box gave Álvarez a penalty, which he converted to put Atlético ahead again. Real struggled to break down a compact defense, failing to register a single shot on target in the entire half despite three efforts.
In the 83rd minute, substitute Griezmann sealed the victory, finishing a perfect pass from Alexis Bäyner.
With this dominant win, Atlético Madrid maintained their city derby superiority, remaining unbeaten in six consecutive Madrid derbies in La Liga.
