Newcastle United 1 – 2 Arsenal
From the brink of defeat, Mikel Arteta’s side pulled off a stunning comeback to win at Newcastle United’s home ground.
At one stage, Arsenal’s loss seemed only a matter of time. But they fought back brilliantly, scoring two late goals to snatch a dramatic victory at St. James’ Park.
On Sunday, Arsenal were trailing 1-0 until the 83rd minute. By full-time, last season’s runners-up had turned the Premier League clash around, winning 2-1.
All three goals in the match came from headers. German forward Nick Voltamadda — Newcastle’s club-record signing this summer — put the hosts ahead in the 34th minute. They looked on course for victory as they protected that lead deep into the game.
With just six minutes of regular time remaining, Mikel Merino met a Declan Rice cross with a header to level the score. Then, in the sixth minute of eight added minutes, Gabriel Magalhães sent Martin Ødegaard’s corner into the net with another header, sparking wild celebrations for Arsenal.
After six matches, Arsenal are now second with 13 points from four wins and one draw. Defending champions Liverpool top the table with 15 points from the same number of games.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, sit 15th with six points.
