Real Madrid’s coach couldn’t confirm how serious the French forward’s injury is.
Right after scoring, Kylian Mbappé left the field with discomfort in his leg. Later, it was revealed that he’s suffering from an ankle issue. However, Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said he’s not sure about the extent of the injury.
At the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday night, Real Madrid secured a 3–1 win over Villarreal. After Vinícius Júnior’s brace, Mbappé scored the third goal in the 81st minute.
Receiving a pass from Brahim Díaz, the French forward found the net with a sharp right-footed strike—setting a personal milestone by scoring in nine consecutive matches for club and country.
However, just two minutes later, Mbappé had to leave the field due to injury, replaced by Brazilian forward Rodrygo.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Xabi Alonso admitted that Mbappé was feeling “a bit of discomfort.”
“I can’t say that he won’t join the France team,” Alonso said. “At this moment, he’s feeling some discomfort. The national team doctors will assess him. We hope it’s nothing serious, but we can’t confirm anything right now.”
During the upcoming international break, France are set to play two World Cup qualifiers — against Azerbaijan on Friday and Iceland three days later. The two-time world champions currently top Group D with six points from two matches.
With 14 goals in just 10 club appearances this season, Mbappé’s potential absence would be a massive blow for both Real Madrid and France.
Real Madrid’s next fixture is on October 19 against Getafe in La Liga. The team currently sits at the top of the table with 21 points from eight matches.
