Ghana, famously known as the ‘Black Stars,’ have secured their spot in the upcoming World Cup, becoming the fifth African nation to qualify.
The stage was set for celebration. Even a loss wouldn’t have mattered, as other results worked in their favor. But winning the match made the triumph all the more special. Ghana erupted in joy as Mohammed Kudus’ goal sealed their World Cup qualification.
The team topped Group I in the African qualifiers. In their final group match at home, they defeated Comoros 1-0.
The decisive moment came in the 47th minute when Thomas Partey delivered a brilliant square pass through the legs of an opponent. Kudus, unmarked and in close range, struck the ball into the net, delighting fans at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The packed stands erupted in celebration, which turned into a full-blown festival after the final whistle.
Ghana entered the match leading the group by three points. Madagascar, sitting in second place, needed Mali to defeat Ghana while also winning their own game. Neither scenario unfolded. Madagascar lost 4-1 to Mali, meaning Ghana’s World Cup place was secure despite their own match result. But the home fans were treated to a victory anyway.
This marks the fifth time Ghana have qualified for the World Cup. They first appeared in 2006, reaching the second round. In 2010, they impressed by making it to the quarter-finals. They exited at the group stage in 2014 and 2022.
With this win, Ghana becomes the fifth African team confirmed for the World Cup.
Earlier, Egypt, who had already qualified, ended their qualifiers with a victory over Guinea-Bissau, resting star player Mohamed Salah. Mohamed Hamdy scored the winner, and Egypt finished the campaign with eight wins and two draws from ten matches.
