Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso was full of praise for Jude Bellingham after the midfielder marked his return from shoulder surgery with a match-winning goal.
Standing tall with arms outstretched — it was a sight fans had missed for months. After recovering from his shoulder operation, Bellingham is slowly finding his rhythm again, and on Wednesday night, he finally got his first goal since returning. His coach, Alonso, couldn’t hide his joy seeing one of his key players back in top form.
Bellingham’s strike helped Real Madrid beat Juventus in the Champions League.
Though the goal came from Bellingham, much of the credit went to Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian star weaved past three defenders in the box and unleashed a powerful shot that struck the post. The rebound fell perfectly to Bellingham, who calmly slotted it home with a gentle touch.
A goal is a goal, however it comes — and for Bellingham, it was his first since June. But it wasn’t just about scoring; Alonso felt the 22-year-old was finally showing his best all-around performance again.
“He played a complete match. Juventus didn’t leave much space, and finding him between the lines was difficult, but he handled it brilliantly,” Alonso said. “His performance against Getafe in La Liga impressed me, and today he was even better.”
“It’s been a while since he last scored. He enjoyed himself out there and fought hard. I’m really happy for him.”
Although naturally a midfielder, Bellingham’s versatility allows him to cover the entire pitch — something Alonso believes makes him one of the most complete players in the world.
“He may be a midfielder, but he’s also great at building attacks and has the determination to finish them,” Alonso added. “He moves and roams all over the pitch. He’s got so many qualities — that’s why he’s so complete, one of the most complete footballers in the world.”
After observing his performances since returning from injury, Alonso also had some tailored advice for his star player.
“I told him to feel more involved in matches, to play a more active and effective role. We have to utilize him in the areas where he can make the biggest impact.”
