Napoli have been dealt a major blow, with Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne set to miss the rest of the year.
The Belgian midfielder has been sidelined for an extended period due to a right thigh injury. He suffered the setback during Serie A’s clash against Inter Milan last Saturday, scoring a penalty in the 33rd minute before picking up the injury and leaving the field shortly afterward. Despite his exit, Napoli went on to win 3-1, reclaiming the top spot in the league table.
The 34-year-old was taken to hospital, where scans revealed a serious injury, the Italian champions confirmed in a statement on Monday.
The club has not officially specified how long De Bruyne will be out, but Italian media reports suggest he could be sidelined for three to four months.
De Bruyne joined Napoli on a free transfer last summer after ending a decade-long spell at Manchester City. He made an immediate impact, scoring a stunning free-kick in his debut match for the club.
This season in Serie A, he has scored four goals in eight matches and appeared in three Champions League games.
