At one point, Wayne Rooney had doubts about the abilities of this Cameroonian forward, but now he believes Bryan Mbeumo is fully worthy of Manchester United.
The Manchester United legend initially had some reservations about signing Mbeumo in the summer. However, over time, the Brentford forward’s consistent performances have earned Rooney’s trust.
United paid over £70 million to bring Mbeumo to Old Trafford.
On Saturday against Brighton, Mbeumo scored twice, playing a key role in United’s victory. Across all competitions, it was his fifth goal in 10 appearances. He had also scored United’s first goal at Anfield this season, helping the club win there for the first time since 2016.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England striker praised Mbeumo’s mentality, saying he embodies the qualities of a true Manchester United player:
“He (Mbeumo) has had some great opportunities in matches at United… He hasn’t always capitalized on them, but his energy, work ethic, and ambition… if you want to be a Manchester United player, you need all of that.”
“Yeah, I’ll admit, I was a little unsure at the start. But I think he has shown that he deserves to be here. Of course, (Matheus) Cunha has arrived, and it’s great that he’s scoring goals. But Mbeumo has been the most consistent in terms of performance, and that’s the most important thing. If you regularly get into the right positions and create chances, the goals will come. Last season at Brentford, he scored 20 goals? And now he’s off to a good start again.”
Rooney’s praise for Mbeumo seems boundless. In his opinion, among United’s new signings, the Cameroonian forward stands out as the best.
“At the moment, Mbeumo’s confidence is sky-high. I hope it continues, because so far this season, he’s been United’s best signing.”
In the Premier League, Manchester United sit sixth with 16 points from nine games (five wins and one draw), while Arsenal lead the table with 22 points.
