Although Pep Guardiola showed frustration on the field over several refereeing decisions in Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle, he chose not to lodge any complaints after the match.
Throughout the game, Guardiola and his coaching staff were repeatedly seen expressing dissatisfaction with various calls. They made a strong case for a penalty in the first half and appeared tense and animated at several moments. After the final whistle, Guardiola was even seen speaking with the referee, but he left all grievances on the pitch and did not publicly challenge any decisions later.
Manchester City lost 2-1 at Newcastle on Saturday in an English Premier League clash.
City controlled possession for 67% of the match and registered 17 shots, but only managed to hit the target four times. Newcastle, meanwhile, took seven shots and hit the target five times. Both sides missed several chances, adding to the drama of the contest.
Several refereeing decisions sparked debate during the game. City called for a penalty after a challenge on Phil Foden, and Newcastle’s opening goal drew scrutiny. After an extended VAR review, the goal was ultimately allowed to stand.
After the match, Guardiola’s brief conversation with the referee reflected City’s frustration. However, he later told the media a different story:
“When VAR has made a decision, what has happened is correct. They know exactly what they are doing. There is no question.”
The match saw three goals in just seven minutes. Harvey Barnes scored twice for Newcastle in the 64th and 70th minutes, while Ruben Dias pulled one back for City in between. Erling Haaland, in excellent form, was unable to find the net.
Guardiola praised both goalkeepers and credited Newcastle for their performance, while also acknowledging his team’s shortcomings:
“Both goalkeepers played well and we missed our chances. Many opportunities were created; it was a great, entertaining game. Early on, we came close to scoring several times.”
“Newcastle are a top-quality team with top-quality players and a top-quality coach. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize on our momentum today. It was a very lively match, both sides had many chances, and momentum shifted at times. In the end, we couldn’t win.”
Despite the defeat, City remain third in the table with 22 points from 12 matches, while Newcastle sit 14th with 15 points from the same number of games.
