Real Madrid have suffered a major blow ahead of their Champions League clash against Olympiacos. The competition’s most successful team will be without first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Dean Henderson for the match.
In a statement on Tuesday, Real Madrid confirmed that Courtois will not travel to Athens due to a “gastrointestinal” infection.
The club did not provide details about Henderson. According to Spanish media, the 20-year-old center-back is struggling with a knee injury and was not included in the squad for the Olympiacos match.
Defenders Dani Carvajal and Antonio Rüdiger were already sidelined. Additionally, David Alaba and Éder Militão suffered injuries during the recent international break.
With Courtois unavailable, Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin may take the starting spot. Lunin has yet to feature for the club this season. The Belgian goalkeeper Courtois had played every minute of the team’s first 17 matches across all competitions.
Real Madrid will face Olympiacos on Wednesday at their stadium, with kickoff at 2:00 AM Bangladesh time.
In their last Champions League outing, Xabi Alonso’s side lost at Liverpool. Across all competitions, they are now winless in three consecutive matches.
