PSG’s top spot in doubt after second league defeat

After their second loss in the league, PSG’s position at the top has become uncertain.

PSG dominated possession and attacking play, but it was Monaco who got the job done at home. In the second half, Sebastian Pocognoli’s side scored the decisive goal to defeat the league champions.

In Saturday’s Ligue 1 clash, PSG lost 1-0. In the 68th minute, Takumi Minamino scored a brilliant goal to give Monaco the lead.

Despite the defeat, PSG remain top with 30 points from 14 matches. However, Marseille and Lens, sitting second and third with 28 points from 13 matches, still have the chance to overtake Luis Enrique’s side.

Monaco rise to sixth with 23 points from 14 matches.

Monaco had the first real opportunity at home. In the fourth minute, Mohamed Salisu’s left-footed shot was saved by PSG’s goalkeeper. Sixteen minutes later, the goalkeeper denied Aleksandr Golovin’s right-footed strike.

In the 32nd minute, PSG’s keeper kept Minamino’s shot out, maintaining a clean sheet. Three minutes later, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s attempt was thwarted by Monaco’s goalkeeper. PSG’s first shot on target came only at this point.

In the second half, Kvaratskhelia had another good chance but could not beat PSG’s keeper.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 68th minute by Minamino, who calmly slotted the ball into the net after receiving a pass from Golovin.

Monaco were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute. German defender Tilo Kehrer initially received a yellow card from the referee, but after a VAR review of the foul, it was upgraded to a red card.

Even with a numerical advantage, PSG could not capitalize in the remaining minutes. Monaco left the field with a deserved and impressive victory.
