Arsenal fall late at Aston Villa as title race opens up

The Premier League title race is officially heating up — and Arsenal’s biggest worry right now is that they already look like they’re struggling to keep pace.

Aston Villa’s relentless pressure at Villa Park paid off with a dramatic 2-1 victory over the league leaders, sealed by a 95th-minute strike from substitute Emiliano Buendía that sent the entire stadium into chaos.

Unai Emery leapt in celebration. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya could only kick the post in frustration. Villa’s set-piece coach, Austin MacPhee, even celebrated by waving his crutches in the air, looking like a one-man “Game of Thrones” reenactment in the technical area.

The cheers were almost certainly echoed at the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City were finishing their preparations to face Sunderland. City then cut the gap to just two points with a 3-0 win. Remarkably, Villa — who didn’t win a league match until Sept. 28 — are now three points behind Arsenal. Chelsea, meanwhile, have fallen off the pace, slipping eight points back after their latest stumble: a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth following a 3-1 defeat to Leeds.

Arsenal always knew injuries could eventually catch up to them, even after spending £250 million on eight summer signings to strengthen a squad competing on four fronts. This match saw their sixth different centre-back pairing of the season, and Piero Hincapié with Jurriën Timber simply couldn’t offer the same solidity as William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães. Ben White started back-to-back games for the first time this campaign and noticeably faded.

Captain Martin Ødegaard completed 90 minutes for only the second time since Oct. 1 and drifted out of the match late on. Declan Rice, who plays almost every minute, was visibly exhausted by full time.

As a group, Arsenal currently look like a mix of players still regaining sharpness and others feeling the toll of a brutal stretch that’s included Tottenham, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Brentford, and now Villa — all within 14 days. Some believed this season’s title race would become a procession, but Arsenal’s defeat has blown the door wide open once again. Now comes the psychological test.

“Well, it’s been five months in the competition and so far we’ve coped,” said Mikel Arteta afterward. “But we’re going to have to prove that we can cope again, again, again, for another six months. That’s the level. If you think we are going to be, in this moment, 10 points clear, I think we’re living in a different world.

“Everything that they have put in the last two weeks and the results that we got, the performances, and to lose it that way emotionally is very touching. You just feel that everything that you put in hasn’t been worth it. But it is worth it because we will learn again from today and it will make us a better team again.”

There were bright spots. Matty Cash’s stunning 36th-minute strike gave Villa a deserved halftime lead, but Arsenal reacted strongly. Arteta quickly introduced Leandro Trossard and Viktor Gyökeres for Eberechi Eze — who was partly at fault for Cash’s goal — and Mikel Merino, who lacked his recent effectiveness up front.

Arsenal swarmed Villa early in the second half, with Bukayo Saka leading the charge down the right. His dangerous cross in the 52nd minute was pushed into Trossard’s path by Emiliano Martínez, and the Belgian calmly finished to level the match.

From there, the game swung back and forth. Both sides had chances before Villa began to reassert control. Emery’s substitutions had impact as Donyell Malen replaced Ollie Watkins, and Buendía entered with three minutes left. Arsenal looked worn out. Malen fired wide, Timber nearly scored an own goal, and Villa Park sensed a winner.

Chaos followed. Youri Tielemans was denied by Raya, Timber blocked Buendía’s follow-up, and Ben White stopped Boubacar Kamara. But Kamara recovered the ball and fed Buendía, who lifted a first-time shot into the roof of the net.

When the noise finally died down, Emery resisted talk of a title challenge.

“We finished this week really playing like we need to — competing, demanding ourselves, adapting to the opponent and playing with personality,” he said. “Dominating sometimes and getting in the box, being intense and aggressive when we needed. Villa Park is special. The supporters transmit the energy to us. How they responded is fantastic.

“We are going to focus game by game. We know our only way is if we are trying to focus on each competition.”

Arsenal’s nerve will now be tested further. Arteta confirmed Cristhian Mosquera will be out for “weeks” with an ankle injury, and Trossard may have worsened a calf issue, forcing his late substitution.

Still, this was their first league defeat since Aug. 31. And upcoming fixtures offer some relief: a Champions League trip to Club Brugge — a chance to rotate — followed by a home match against bottom-placed Wolves.

There is no reason for Arsenal to panic. But they must respond. That is what a tight title race demands.
