PSG defender Achraf Hakimi has said he was scared after injuring his ankle ligament.
The African Footballer of the Year is ready to return to the field. The Moroccan defender, who plays for PSG, has confirmed that he has recovered from his ankle ligament injury.
This year’s Africa Cup of Nations is being held in Morocco. Concerns over the captain’s fitness arose last month when he got injured during PSG’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
Next Sunday, Morocco will face Cameroon in the tournament’s opening match. Speaking at a press conference the day before, the 27-year-old Hakimi shared the news of his recovery. Whether he plays will depend on coach Walid Regragui.
“I feel good. I am following the advice of the doctors and the coach. After that, we’ll see what the coach decides. You can ask him,” Hakimi said.
“After the injury, I was worried. I didn’t want to miss the Cup of Nations, which we are hosting. I wanted to be with the team. I don’t know exactly when I will play, but I feel ready.”
Hakimi’s dedication during his recovery has impressed Morocco’s coach. However, he gave no indication about whether the star defender will play on Sunday.
“Will he be in the starting eleven? Or will we give him rest? We’ll see. That will be my decision. He might start tomorrow… or he might not,” said Regragui.
