There has been no indication of when the forward might return to the field.
The festive mood of Christmas has quickly faded for Alexander Isak and his club Liverpool. The forward suffered a leg injury in the recent match against Tottenham Hotspur and has since undergone surgery, ruling him out for an indefinite period.
In Liverpool’s 2–1 Premier League victory on Saturday, Isak came off the bench and scored the decisive goal just 11 minutes after being introduced.
However, he was injured while taking the shot, following a challenge from Micky van de Ven. Isak was unable to celebrate the goal and eventually limped off the pitch with support from two staff members after receiving medical treatment.
Even on the day of the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had expressed concern over Isak’s condition—and those fears have now been confirmed. On Monday, Liverpool announced that the 26-year-old forward had undergone surgery.
“Following diagnosis, surgery was successfully performed today on (Isak’s) ankle, including treatment for a fracture to his fibula. Isak will continue his rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre, with no estimated timeframe set for his return to action.”
After a turbulent spell and strained relations with Newcastle United, Isak joined Liverpool at the very end of the summer transfer window in a record-breaking £170 million move. However, he has yet to fully live up to expectations at his new club. He has scored three goals in total for Liverpool, including two in 10 Premier League appearances.
Now, he faces another spell on the sidelines.
Liverpool’s next league match is scheduled for Saturday at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Isak’s injury is not only a concern for Liverpool but also a major worry for Sweden. The national team is set to play a World Cup qualification playoff in March, where they will face Ukraine in the semi-final. At this stage, Isak’s chances of featuring in that match appear slim.
