Former Barcelona midfielder Rafinha Alcântara has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32.
Rafinha’s career, unfortunately, was heavily impacted by injuries, and ultimately he had to bow out to the physical toll. The former Barcelona midfielder officially called time on his playing days at 32.
The son of Mazinho, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, Rafinha never fully realized his potential due to repeated injuries. Unlike his brother Thiago Alcântara, who made a significant impact at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool, Rafinha could never quite establish himself at the top level.
Rafinha made his Barcelona debut in November 2011. Over nine years, he managed only 90 appearances for the Catalan giants before leaving permanently in 2020 to join PSG.
During his time with Barcelona B and on loan at Celta Vigo, Rafinha caught the eye of both clubs’ coaches, particularly Luis Enrique. When Enrique became Barcelona’s first-team coach, the doors opened for Rafinha, who gradually became a regular contributor and played a role in Barcelona’s historic 2014–15 treble-winning season.
However, he suffered one of three major knee injuries before the treble victory, keeping him sidelined for 182 days. Upon returning, he played in the memorable 6–1 win against PSG, a comeback story that became part of football folklore.
Another serious knee injury in 2018 effectively ended Rafinha’s chapter at Barcelona. He spent time on loan at Inter Milan and Celta before joining PSG, where he again struggled to settle.
After a stint with Real Sociedad, Rafinha joined Al-Arabi. Unfortunately, another knee injury forced him to step away from the game. He announced his retirement on social media, saying:
“Over a year ago I suffered a knee injury, which unfortunately prevented me from fighting to return at the highest level. It is difficult to accept that I can no longer continue. Thanks to my family for always being by my side, and thanks to everyone for their support and love. Thank you to football for shaping me, farewell.”
Rafinha last played for Barcelona over six years ago. The Spanish champions paid tribute to his contributions and sent their best wishes upon his retirement.
When he won the Champions League trophy in Berlin, Rafinha was just 22. By that time, he had already claimed nearly every possible club title. A bright future and immense talent lay ahead, but injuries prevented him from having more opportunities on the pitch.
