Former Manchester City defender João Cancelo looks set for yet another mid-season move, with reports suggesting he is preparing to leave Al-Hilal once the January transfer window opens. A return to Barcelona is now being viewed as a genuine option, while leading clubs in Italy are also monitoring the situation as Europe’s top sides seek defensive reinforcements.

Since swapping Manchester City for Saudi Arabia, Cancelo’s future has remained under close watch, and his spell in the Middle East may not last long. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter Milan have already contacted Al-Hilal to discuss the framework of a possible loan deal. Meanwhile, Barcelona and Juventus have also made enquiries to understand the defender’s availability.

Cancelo’s fondness for Barcelona has never been in doubt. The Portuguese international spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Camp Nou, where he left a strong impression both on the pitch and within the dressing room. His emotional attachment to the club was clear during last summer’s Club World Cup, when he was jeered by Real Madrid fans after coming up against their rivals.

He said: “I’m a Barca fan, it’s normal. I love Barca. I loved my team in Barca. I love the group at Barca. But now I’m at Al-Hilal and I’m very happy here.”

Initially, Barcelona were expected to remain quiet in January due to financial fair play restrictions. That stance changed after Andreas Christensen suffered a long-term injury, leaving head coach Hansi Flick short of defensive options. While a central defender was the club’s primary target, Cancelo has re-entered the conversation thanks to his versatility. Equally comfortable on either flank or even stepping into midfield, he provides flexibility that Barcelona currently lack.

Cancelo is not the only defender on Barcelona’s radar. Nathan Aké has also emerged as a strong candidate as the club searches for experienced yet affordable options. The Manchester City centre-back has played just 596 minutes this season and is believed to be open to a January move. City are reportedly willing to sell Aké for around £21 million ($28m), though Barcelona would likely need to pursue a loan deal due to their financial constraints. Aké’s decision to reject a move to West Ham, who are battling near the bottom of the Premier League, highlights his determination to continue competing at the highest level. Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and Crystal Palace are also tracking his situation, but Barcelona’s stature and Flick’s project could prove decisive.

Defensive uncertainty at Camp Nou is not limited to outfield players. Marc-André ter Stegen’s future has come into question after more than a decade as Barcelona’s undisputed No.1. Ongoing fitness concerns and the rise of summer signing Joan Garcia have seen the German goalkeeper pushed into an unfamiliar backup role. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, regular playing time is becoming increasingly important for Ter Stegen. Girona have publicly declared their interest, while reports indicate Aston Villa are also considering a move.

Flick has stressed that the final decision regarding Ter Stegen’s future lies with the player himself.

He said: “Marc is the captain and has played many games in the 12 years he has been here. We talked with the rest of the coaches and we wanted to give him the opportunity to play. He is back, it is only for this match and I think it is a good next step. He is the team captain. He had the opportunity to return and he took it. He has given a lot to the club and must be respected.”

Villa’s interest is closely linked to uncertainty surrounding Emiliano Martínez, who has been tipped for a potential move away. Should their No.1 depart, Unai Emery is expected to target a top-level replacement. A switch to the Premier League would offer Ter Stegen consistent high-level competition, with Villa currently pushing for a Champions League place.

With Cancelo potentially heading for the exit, Aké available on the market, and Ter Stegen weighing his options, Barcelona’s January window is shaping up to be far busier than originally expected. The Catalan side return to action on Saturday with a derby clash against Espanyol, before travelling to the Middle East for the Supercopa de España.
