Two Equatorial Guinean players have been sanctioned for insulting the referee during the Africa Cup of Nations. Both have been banned for four matches.
The Guinean Football Federation announced their punishment on Wednesday. Following a 1-0 defeat to Sudan last Sunday, the team’s captain Carlos Akakpo and midfielder Jose Miranda were sanctioned for disrespecting Congo referee Messi Enkounou.
Of the four-match ban, two matches are suspended for one year.
Their suspension began on Wednesday during Guinea’s 3-1 loss to Algeria. The team lost all three of their group-stage matches and were eliminated from the tournament.
Additionally, Burkina Faso’s captain Traore was fined $10,000 for “offensive comments” following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Algeria last Sunday.
