Manchester City have completed the biggest deal of the January transfer window so far. The Premier League side signed Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for €72 million, once again bringing Pep Guardiola’s free-spending approach into the spotlight at a club currently sitting second in the league table.
There is no doubt that Guardiola is one of the greatest coaches in football history. A manager who has reshaped modern football, his trophy cabinet includes almost every major honour in European club football. Yet one question continues to draw attention: the sheer scale of his spending in the transfer market since taking charge of Manchester City in 2016. According to Transfermarkt, the signing of Semenyo has pushed Guardiola’s total spending at City beyond the €2 billion mark. To be precise, Guardiola has spent €2.03 billion as City manager (approximately Tk 28,888.93 crore). No other coach in football history has crossed the €2 billion spending barrier in the transfer market.
After moving from Bayern Munich to Manchester City, Guardiola has enjoyed unmatched freedom in the transfer market. That freedom has been backed by the vast financial power of City’s owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family. While Guardiola’s total spending at City has exceeded €2 billion, his net spend—calculated after player sales—is €1.01 billion, which is lower than that of Manchester United or Arsenal. However, among Premier League managers, Guardiola still tops the list for the highest net spending.
Transfermarkt data shows that since joining City in 2016, Guardiola has spent more than any other coach across all leagues, with no close competition. Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone ranks second, having spent €1.22 billion (around Tk 17,361.82 crore). Although Simeone has been in charge of the Spanish club since 2011, the comparison considers spending only from the time Guardiola arrived at City. Italian coach Antonio Conte sits third, having spent €1.19 billion (Tk 16,934.89 crore) across four clubs during the same period.
The top three therefore include a Spaniard, an Argentine, and an Italian. Another Italian features in the top five—AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri. Since Guardiola’s arrival at City, Allegri has managed two clubs and spent €1.17 billion, the same amount spent by England’s current head coach Thomas Tuchel. Before taking over the England job last year, the German managed four clubs between 2016 and now.
According to Transfermarkt, Guardiola has spent a total of €2.58 billion (around Tk 36,715.98 crore) over the course of his coaching career. He is followed by Benfica’s current Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, who ranks second with €1.99 billion (approximately Tk 28,319 crore). Third on the list is Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti. After leaving Real Madrid to take charge of Brazil, Ancelotti’s career spending stands at €1.8 billion (Tk 25,615.80 crore).
