According to BBC, Manchester United is set to hand Michael Carrick the reins for the remainder of the season.
The club is expected to announce the new coach ahead of their match against Manchester City. BBC reports that Old Trafford is preparing to appoint Carrick as the interim manager for the rest of the campaign.
The Premier League giants could make the announcement as early as Tuesday.
On January 5, United sacked head coach Ralf Rangnick. For the next two matches, the club entrusted the U-18 coach, Darren Fletcher, with first-team duties.
For the remainder of the season, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were the frontrunners for the interim role. BBC confirmed on Tuesday that 44-year-old Carrick will take charge.
Carrick played for United from 2006 to 2018 and also served as interim manager in 2021. From 2022 until last year, he was the head coach at Middlesbrough. Now, he returns to his familiar surroundings at United, tasked with steering the team back on track.
BBC also revealed the members of Carrick’s coaching staff. Steve Holland will serve as assistant coach, joined by Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.
United currently sit seventh in the league table with 32 points from 21 matches.
In their most recent game, United were eliminated from the FA Cup third round after a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. This Saturday, they will host city rivals Manchester City in a Premier League clash.
