Former striker Van Nistelrooy has prior experience working with the Netherlands national team on two previous occasions.
The ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United striker has joined the Dutch coaching staff ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
The Dutch Football Association announced Van Nistelrooy’s appointment on Friday. He had previously worked with the national team twice, serving as an assistant coach under Guus Hiddink and Danny Blind. In 2024, he briefly acted as interim coach for Manchester United. Most recently, he was with Leicester City, leaving the club by mutual consent after their relegation at the end of the 2024–25 season.
Returning to his home national team is a matter of great pride for the 49-year-old Nistelrooy.
“Especially since this is happening on the World Cup stage, it makes it even more special. With my experience in various roles including as an assistant, I know this position suits me. I am looking forward to contributing to a successful tournament and making a meaningful impact in this role,” he said.
The Netherlands will take to the field in March for preparatory matches against Norway and Ecuador ahead of the World Cup.
Ronald Koeman’s team is placed in Group F for the tournament, which will be held from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Their other three opponents are Japan, Tunisia, and the European play-off winner.
The Netherlands will begin their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14 in Dallas.
