Manchester United handed Arsenal a heavy blow in the title race with this home defeat.
Unfortunately for Mikel Arteta’s side, Manchester United scored within the first half-hour. However, a defensive blunder soon allowed Arsenal to equalize. After the break, the match intensified, with several dramatic twists before United sealed a thrilling victory.
At Emirates Stadium on Sunday, the Premier League high-voltage clash ended 3–2 in favour of United.
Arsenal had initially gone behind due to an own goal by Lisandro Martínez, only to be brought back level by a goal from Bryan Mbuemo. In the second half, Patrick Doku put United ahead, before Mikel Merino briefly revived Arsenal’s hopes. But Matheus Cunha’s brilliant strike crushed any chance of a comeback for the hosts.
This was Arsenal’s third defeat of the season, and their first setback in the New Year—all three coming in the Premier League. Despite a winning streak in other competitions, Arteta’s team had been struggling domestically, drawing consecutive matches without scoring prior to this encounter. Even after breaking the deadlock, they lost their way and dropped crucial points.
The defeat also denied them a chance to extend the gap from second place to seven points. After 23 matches, Arsenal remain on 50 points with 15 wins and 5 draws.
In the same number of matches, Manchester City sit second with 46 points, while Aston Villa hold third place.
Meanwhile, United appear to have found their rhythm under new coach Michael Carrick. After last week’s Manchester Derby victory, they now have another scalp over a title contender.
This thrilling win also lifted United up the league table: with 10 wins and 8 draws, they now have 38 points and occupy fourth place.
Arsenal began the match brightly, playing attacking football from the start. Their first shot on goal came in the 18th minute when Martin Ødegaard’s header from Bukayo Saka’s cut-back was quickly saved by the goalkeeper.
They took the lead in the 29th minute. From the byline, Saka delivered a cut-back to Ødegaard, whose shot deflected off Lisandro Martínez and went into the net.
Five minutes later, Bruno Fernandes had a chance to level, but his shot from a promising position in the box went wide. Two minutes after that, Arsenal’s defense faltered again, allowing Mbuemo to calmly slot home and bring United back on level terms.
In the fifth minute of the second half, Patrick Doku put United ahead. Playing through several Arsenal defenders with quick exchanges with Fernandes, the young Danish winger struck a powerful shot over the goalkeeper and into the crossbar before bouncing into the net. Doku had also scored the second goal in United’s 2–0 win over Manchester City last week.
Arsenal pressed for another equalizer but created few clear opportunities. In the 83rd minute, Saka’s shot was parried away by the United goalkeeper. From the resulting corner, Mikel Merino scored after a scramble, briefly restoring hope.
However, just three minutes later, Cunha ended Arsenal’s chances with a spectacular strike. Collecting a pass from a teammate, the Brazilian forward surged forward and fired a bullet from nearly 25 yards, the ball grazing the post and nestling in the net.
Arsenal had one last chance in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but they could not produce any further drama.
Elsewhere, Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace 3–1 at Selhurst Park, moving into fifth place with 37 points from 23 matches. United and Chelsea’s wins pushed Liverpool down to sixth, on 36 points.
