Even at home, fans’ boos have become a regular occurrence for Real Madrid.
Some players are routinely on the receiving end, and there have been few instances where the entire team faces it. Real Madrid has experienced such bitter moments at the Bernabéu on multiple occasions. Yet coach Álvaro Arbeloa hopes to find the support of the fans this time. Their backing, he believes, will energize and inspire the team.
Last Wednesday, Real Madrid’s direct knockout hopes in the Champions League ended after a 4-2 loss to Benfica. In La Liga, they will host Rayo Vallecano at home on Sunday.
Recent experiences suggest that fans might voice their frustration and anger loudly during this match as well. But Arbeloa’s thinking is different.
“No, I’m not hoping for boos. Rather, I hope the whole Bernabéu will stand by the team. We know we need the support of our fans because together we are stronger. Our goal is to win this match and continue fighting for the league title.”
Among the players, Vinícius Jr. has faced the most boos recently. Jude Bellingham has also experienced it. The coach, however, stands firmly by them, calling them key assets of the team.
“I have no objection to all the football debates. But I want the best players on the field. The more they play, the better they become… they are players who can open up a game at any moment.”
“Those who aren’t Real Madrid fans may not want these players here. But true Madrid supporters want to see their best players on the pitch.”
After the loss to Benfica, Kylian Mbappé openly expressed disappointment over the team’s lack of internal drive. Bellingham described that performance as “terrible.” Arbeloa also has to manage various internal issues within the squad, but he remains committed.
“We are fighting to find the consistency we need. This is not the time for sulking or celebration. This is a time to work… that’s it! Sitting with regrets won’t move us forward. When something isn’t right, there’s no alternative to improving. As a coach, this is my path. Surely, I will make many mistakes. But I will also try to correct them.”
