Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has urged the club to push for a rule change.
Under current regulations, Manchester City will not be able to field Marc Guehi in the League Cup final. However, Guardiola is desperate to have the defender available for the title clash, which is why he wants the rule amended.
City reached the English League Cup final by defeating Newcastle United 5-1 on aggregate. They won the second leg 3-1 on Wednesday, after a 2-0 victory in the first leg.
When that first leg took place, Guehi was still a Crystal Palace player. He has since joined Manchester City and made his debut for his new club. But under League Cup rules, he cannot play in this season’s tournament for City because he already appeared in the competition for Palace.
After securing the final, Guardiola expressed his frustration with the rule.
“Why can’t he play? Why not! We pay his wages, he is our player. You spend a lot of money to sign a player, and then because of some law, he can’t play… which I don’t understand,” Guardiola said.
He added that he has urged the club to take the initiative to change the rule.
“I hope they change the rule. I have told the club they must try. I hope we can convince the Carabao Cup authorities to allow Marc to play in the final.”
Guardiola’s team will face Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the final on March 22.
