Although Roberto De Zerbi’s start at the French club had been promising, it ended on a disappointing note. With Marseille already eliminated early from the Champions League, the pressure was mounting. That pressure intensified after a humiliating 5-0 defeat to PSG, leading De Zerbi to step down as the club’s coach.
On Tuesday, Marseille announced that the Italian coach’s contract had been terminated by mutual agreement.
This season, Marseille had been knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, losing five of their last eight matches, including the final two. Domestically, the team struggled to find form as well; after a draw at Paris FC, the bitter experience against PSG last Sunday added to the woes.
Just two days later, De Zerbi left his post. He had joined Marseille in June 2024 after a successful spell with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 46-year-old former midfielder had guided Marseille to a runner-up finish in Ligue 1 last season. However, this year the team has fallen behind in the title race. After 21 matches, Marseille sit fourth with 39 points, 12 points behind league leaders PSG.
