A call-up to the June–July World Cup squad is still a long way off for the 33-year-old star.
Nearly two months after undergoing knee surgery, Neymar played his first match back. With that return, his chances of featuring in the upcoming World Cup later this year have grown slightly brighter.
In recent years, Neymar’s career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries. Setback after setback cost him form, and after spells in European and Saudi football, he eventually returned to his homeland. Yet the dream of playing in another World Cup has never faded from his heart.
Determined to turn that dream into reality, Neymar underwent minor knee surgery last December as part of his recovery challenge. On Sunday, he finally made his comeback, coming off the bench to play the entire second half in Santos’ dominant 6-0 win over Velo Clube.
The emphatic victory secured Santos a place in the quarter-finals of the Campeonato Paulista.
Neymar had a golden opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet but failed to convert. Even so, Santos coach Joan Pablo was pleased with his performance.
“I think everyone needs Neymar. Santos, the national team… If he does well, (Brazil coach Carlo) Ancelotti will be happy. One thing is connected to the other.”
Toward the end of last year, Neymar began to show glimpses of his old brilliance. He also played a key role in helping Santos avoid relegation from the top tier.
Right now, his main focus is a return to the national team. But to achieve that, he must first regain full fitness. Coach Ancelotti has already made it clear that he will not call up any player who is not completely fit.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, last wore the national jersey in October 2023.
Although his peak years may be behind him, Pablo believes the 33-year-old forward remains at his best.
“He is a world-class player.”
“He still has that desire. I see it in every match, even when he plays limited minutes, and in training sessions where they compete among themselves. He wants to be involved in those battles and he wants to win. That’s what motivates him.”
