Tamim Iqbal attended the second international friendly between Bangladesh and the Maldives at Kings Arena today. The former captain of the national cricket team brought along his 9-year-old son to watch the match at Bashundhara Kings Arena. However, he did not stay for the entire game, leaving shortly after the second half began.
Tamim shared that this was his first time watching an international match of the Bangladesh national football team live in the stadium. He said, “This is the first time I’ve watched a Bangladesh football match from the stands. I’m truly delighted to witness the game live. The atmosphere and facilities at Kings Arena are fantastic.” Interestingly, Tamim revealed that his 9-year-old son had already been to the arena before to watch a game.
Before Tamim left, Bangladesh had already leveled the match thanks to a goal by Mojibur Rahman Jony in the 42nd minute. Earlier, Maldives took the lead in the 23rd minute through Ali Fasir. Ultimately, Bangladesh secured a thrilling 2-1 victory with a late goal.
Highlighting football’s popularity in Bangladesh, Tamim said before leaving, “There’s no doubt that football is the most popular sport in Bangladesh. Cricket is also loved, but football has the edge.”
He also shared his thoughts on how football’s reach could grow further: “I encourage everyone to come to the stadium with their families to watch games. A full stadium benefits the growth of football in this country.”
Tamim isn’t the only cricketer showing support for football. In the first match against the Maldives, former national cricket captain and head of the women’s wing, Habibul Bashar, was also present.
