The new coach is confident he can rebuild Manchester United into a formidable force once again.
In his first press conference as Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim repeatedly emphasized one word: “belief.” The Portuguese manager firmly believes he is the right person to restore the lost glory of a club that has been haunted by its past for years.
Following a string of poor performances, United sacked Erik ten Hag last October. Earlier this month, they appointed Amorim on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The 39-year-old becomes the sixth permanent manager of the Premier League’s most successful club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Since Ferguson’s departure, United has failed to win another league title. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Erik ten Hag all fell short. Now, the challenge rests on Amorim’s shoulders.
The coach, who enjoyed great success with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, describes himself as a “dreamer.” Speaking with determination on Friday, he expressed confidence in his ability to rebuild United, though he acknowledged it would take time.
“I’m a bit of a dreamer. I believe in myself, and I believe in the club. I think we share the same vision and mentality, which can help achieve our goals,” Amorim said.
“I truly believe in the players’ abilities. I know many don’t share that belief, but I do. I want to try something new. I genuinely believe I’m the right person for this job at the right time. I really do.”
Under Amorim’s guidance, United will play their first match this Sunday against Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
United currently sits 13th in the league table with 15 points from 11 matches, while Ipswich is in 17th place.
