Manchester City 0–4 Tottenham
Manchester City has lost yet again. The four-time consecutive English Premier League champions have now suffered five straight defeats across all competitions. Their latest disappointment came on Saturday, courtesy of Tottenham, who delivered a resounding 4-0 defeat at the Etihad. This marks the first time since 2006 that City has lost five matches in a row.
On a night of misery for City, James Maddison shone brightest for Tottenham. The English midfielder scored twice, netting in the 13th and 20th minutes. Pedro Porro added to the tally in the 52nd minute, and Brennan Johnson sealed the win in injury time. This 4-0 loss is City’s heaviest home defeat since a 5-1 thrashing by Arsenal in 2003.
The defeat ended City’s remarkable 52-game unbeaten streak at the Etihad. Their last home loss came just before the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Ironically, this embarrassment came just two days after Pep Guardiola extended his contract for two more years. To make matters worse, City has now recorded three consecutive Premier League defeats, and Guardiola suffered his first-ever 4-0 home loss as a manager.
City’s downfall began in October, starting with a League Cup loss to this same Tottenham side. They’ve since lost to Bournemouth, Sporting, Brighton, and now Spurs.
Despite this loss, City remains second in the Premier League standings with 23 points from 12 matches. Liverpool, with a game in hand, leads by five points. Meanwhile, Tottenham climbed to sixth place with 19 points from 12 matches after this emphatic win.
