Getafe came close to changing the outcome of the match, with two attempts hitting the post. After a lackluster performance and a loss to Liverpool, Real Madrid bounced back in style. Despite Getafe posing a challenge, luck wasn’t on their side. Carlo Ancelotti’s team secured an impressive victory, closing the gap with league leaders Barcelona.
On Sunday, at Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid defeated Getafe 2-0 in their La Liga clash. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring, followed by Kylian Mbappé doubling the lead.
Real now sits second in the league with 33 points from 14 matches, boasting 10 wins and three draws. Atletico Madrid, having played 15 games, holds third place with 32 points, while Barcelona leads the table with 34 points from an equal 15 matches.
Though Real dominated possession from the start, their attacking efforts were initially ineffective. They managed only one off-target shot in the first 25 minutes.
A turning point came in the 30th minute when Antonio Rüdiger was fouled in the box during a corner, earning Real a penalty. Unlike the disappointing penalty miss against Liverpool days ago, Mbappé let Bellingham take the shot this time. With composure, Bellingham converted the spot kick to give Real the lead.
Eight minutes later, Mbappé silenced his critics with a brilliant goal. Receiving a through pass from Bellingham, the French star evaded a defender and unleashed a powerful long-range shot that hit the far post before finding the net. This marked Mbappé’s eighth La Liga goal of the season, matching Vinícius Jr.’s tally.
In the 53rd minute, Brahim Díaz came close to extending Real’s lead. After a slick give-and-go with Mbappé, he misfired wide despite being one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Getafe nearly struck back three minutes later when Carles Pérez’s shot, following a skillful move in the box, was denied by the post.
Federico Valverde tested the Getafe goalkeeper with a thunderous long-range shot in the 72nd minute, but David Soria made an excellent save. Two minutes later, Mbappé missed a golden opportunity, sending his shot narrowly past the far post after beating the keeper.
Getafe’s misfortune continued late in the match. In the 84th minute, John Patrick’s powerful strike hit the crossbar and post, denying them once again.
Before that, in the 77th minute, Soria produced another stunning save, diving to stop a rocket shot from Mbappé inside the box. In added time, Mbappé threatened again, but his shot missed the target by inches, leaving the scoreline unchanged.
Real’s solid performance not only showcased their resilience but also brought them closer to Barcelona at the top of the table.
