In a thrilling 7-goal encounter, Chelsea closed the gap to 4 points behind Liverpool after defeating Tottenham. Despite a rough season, Tottenham Hotspur made an early impression, scoring two goals within the first six minutes. However, Chelsea made a spectacular comeback, securing a remarkable 4-3 win.
At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, the hosts managed to reduce the deficit late in the match but couldn’t find the equalizer. Chelsea, led by Enzo Maresca, emerged victorious, with Cole Palmer netting a brace in another stellar performance.
Chelsea fell behind 2-0 in the opening 11 minutes due to two mistakes by full-back Marc Cucurella. In the 5th minute, Dominic Solanke scored, followed by Dejan Kulusevski’s goal in the 11th minute. However, in the 17th minute, Jadon Sancho pulled one back with a powerful shot from outside the box, assisted by Cucurella’s pass. Chelsea went into halftime trailing by one goal.
In the 59th minute, a foul on Moisés Caicedo inside the box earned Chelsea a penalty, which Palmer converted successfully to equalize. In the 73rd minute, Chelsea took the lead when Palmer’s brilliant dribble and shot were blocked, but the deflection fell to Enzo Fernandez, who scored with a powerful volley.
Ten minutes later, another penalty came Chelsea’s way, and Palmer sealed the win with a Panenka shot after being fouled inside the box.
Palmer has now directly contributed to 38 goals in the Premier League in 2024 (25 goals and 13 assists), the highest by any Chelsea player in a single year. This season, the 22-year-old English midfielder has scored 11 goals.
In added time, Son Heung-min pulled one back for Tottenham, but Chelsea held firm. With this win, Chelsea claimed their fourth consecutive victory. With 31 points from 15 matches (9 wins and 4 draws), they sit in second place, just 4 points behind Liverpool, who have played one match less.
Arsenal, with 29 points from 15 matches, have dropped to third place, while Manchester City is fourth with 27 points from 15 matches. After their sixth defeat, Tottenham remains in 11th place with 20 points.
