Liverpool 6-3 Tottenham
Arne Slott’s team heads into the holiday break with their position at the top firmly secured. After scoring three goals in the first half, Liverpool added three more in the second. Tottenham Hotspur managed to score twice in quick succession towards the end, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the match. With a dominant performance, Liverpool further solidified their spot at the top of the Premier League standings.
The match, held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, ended 6-3 in Liverpool’s favor.
Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah each scored twice, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai also found the net once each.
This is the highest-scoring match between these two teams in Premier League history, surpassing the previous record of a 6-2 victory for Liverpool in May 1993.
After a string of disappointing results against Newcastle United and Fulham, Liverpool returned to dominant form, securing a crucial win. With this victory, they now have 39 points from 16 matches, keeping their place at the top.
Meanwhile, Tottenham’s rough patch continued with their eighth loss of the season. They are in 11th place with 23 points from 17 matches.
Earlier in the day, Chelsea played to a goalless draw against Everton, leaving them second in the table with 35 points from 17 matches, while Arsenal is third with 33 points.
Liverpool started the match aggressively, having taken eight shots in the first 20 minutes. Their best chance came in the 18th minute when Mohamed Salah’s shot hit the crossbar after a brilliant dribble past three defenders.
In the 23rd minute, Liverpool took the lead with a diving header from Díaz following a perfect cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Mac Allister doubled the lead in the 36th minute after a failed clearance from Spurs allowed him to score from close range.
Tottenham responded in the 41st minute when Mac Allister lost possession and English midfielder Oliver Skipp scored from outside the box to pull one back.
However, Liverpool quickly restored their two-goal advantage within five minutes, with Szoboszlai assisting Salah for a well-taken goal. Salah extended the lead in the 54th minute after a loose ball fell into his path, and he capitalized on the opportunity.
Salah’s 14th goal of the season pushed him ahead of Erling Haaland in the Premier League scoring race.
Salah added another goal in the 61st minute after a pass from Szoboszlai, making it 5-1. Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski scored in the 72nd minute, but it was more of a consolation as the gap remained large.
In the 83rd minute, Solanke pulled one back again for Spurs, but Liverpool regained their three-goal lead just two minutes later. Luis Díaz found the net for Liverpool to make it 6-3 and seal the win.
In another match, Manchester United lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth. Bournemouth now sits fifth with 28 points from 17 matches, while United is in 13th place with 22 points.
