New AC Milan coach Sérgio Conceição is determined to finish the season in Serie A’s top four at any cost to achieve his primary goal: securing a Champions League spot.
Taking charge during a challenging period for AC Milan, Conceição has set his sights firmly on ensuring the team qualifies for Europe’s premier competition. To achieve that, he is focused on stabilizing their league performance and finishing among the top four.
Milan’s recent form in Serie A has been far from ideal. The team has managed just two wins in their last seven matches, struggling with inconsistency since the season began. Their most recent game, a 1-1 draw at home against Roma last Sunday, reflected these struggles.
The following day, Milan parted ways with coach Paulo Fonseca and appointed Portugal’s Sérgio Conceição to lead the team.
Conceição’s tenure in Milan’s dugout begins with the Italian Super Cup semi-final, where the team will face Juventus this Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the other semi-final, Inter Milan will take on Atalanta.
However, Conceição isn’t overly concerned about the Super Cup at the moment. His primary focus is on returning Milan to the Champions League stage next season. That battle won’t be easy, as the team currently sits eighth in the Serie A standings, significantly behind in the race. During his first press conference, Conceição emphasized improving the team’s league position.
“We all want one thing: for Milan to return to a position where it can qualify for the Champions League. We are Milan.”
“As for my arrival here, it’s not a good sign—it means something hasn’t gone right. There isn’t much time to prepare for the Juventus match, but we’re not here to complain or make excuses.”
Milan currently has 27 points from 17 matches, trailing fourth-placed Lazio, who has 35 points from 18 games, by eight points. Atalanta leads the league with 41 points.
