Lionel Messi has been in the United States for less than two years, yet he has already made a significant mark in a country traditionally less focused on football. In fact, the World Cup-winning captain of Argentina has made such an impact that he will soon receive the highest civilian honor in the U.S., the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Today, Messi will receive the prestigious award from outgoing President Joe Biden.
While football is not as popular in the U.S. as basketball, baseball, or the NFL, it gained a significant boost when Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023. His presence has propelled American football forward in ways no one expected. Messi will be only the second footballer to receive this honor, after U.S. women’s footballer Megan Rapinoe.
Along with Messi, the likes of basketball legend Magic Johnson, Hollywood star Denzel Washington, Michael J. Fox, and former First Lady Hillary Clinton are among the 19 individuals receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year.
The White House announced this news in a statement today, explaining that these individuals are being recognized for advancing the U.S. and embodying qualities of leadership, respect, and integrity. President Biden believes that great leaders remain steadfast in their beliefs, treat others with respect, and prioritize kindness.
A former player for both Barcelona and PSG, Messi has won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Player awards eight times each, and a total of 45 trophies, making him the greatest trophy collector in football history. While he strikes fear into opponents on the field, Messi is also known for his generosity off the field. The White House highlighted his charity work for children, noting his contributions through the Leo Messi Foundation, which focuses on improving healthcare and education for children worldwide. He also serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
