Inter Milan 2 – 3 AC Milan
Despite trailing 2-0 against the three-time champions, AC Milan made an incredible comeback to win their first Italian Super Cup since 2016.
It seemed inevitable that Lautaro Martínez would shine in this final, and the Argentine striker scored once again. His contribution helped Mehdi Taremi find the net too. However, after being two goals down, AC Milan made an astonishing turnaround to claim the Italian Super Cup with a dramatic win.
The final, held at Al-Awwal Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Monday night, saw AC Milan defeat Inter Milan 3-2.
In the second half, goals from Theo Hernández and Christian Pulisic leveled the score, and in added time, Tammy Abraham sealed the victory for Milan.
Inter Milan, aiming for their fourth consecutive Super Cup title, fell short. AC Milan won their eighth overall, tying Inter’s record, though Juventus still holds the record with nine victories.
Following a poor run of form, AC Milan recently parted ways with coach Paulo Fonseca and appointed Sérgio Conceição, who led them to the title in only his second match in charge.
Milan, who had defeated Juventus 2-1 in the semifinals, had their first opportunity in the 9th minute when Dutch midfielder Tijani Reijnders missed a good shot opportunity from inside the box.
Inter Milan, coming off a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the semifinals, almost took the lead in the 23rd minute, but goalkeeper Mike Mián brilliantly denied Federico Dimarco’s long-range shot.
In added time of the first half, Martínez gave Inter the lead with a superb goal. After a quick throw-in, Taremi found Martínez in the box, and the striker managed to evade two defenders to score with his left foot.
Martínez had also scored the only goal in Inter’s win over Napoli in the previous Super Cup final, and he had scored in the previous two single-match finals as well.
In the second half, Taremi doubled Inter’s lead in the 47th minute, beating Milan’s goalkeeper after a high ball from Stefan de Vrij.
Four minutes later, Theo Hernández scored a brilliant low free-kick to reduce the deficit for Milan.
In the 71st minute, Inter’s Carlos Augusto’s header hit the post, and goalkeeper Mián cleared the ball off the goal line.
With just 10 minutes remaining in regular time, Pulisic leveled the score at 2-2. He controlled Hernández’s pass from the left and calmly finished with a great shot.
In the 93rd minute, a brilliant pass from Rafael Leão set up Tammy Abraham, who easily slotted the ball into an empty net, giving Milan the win.
AC Milan, who had lost 3-0 to Inter in the 2022 Super Cup final, took sweet revenge this time.
Since 2023, the Italian Super Cup has been contested by four teams, including the Serie A champions and the Coppa Italia finalists.
