In another dominant performance, Hansi Flick’s team crushed Real Betis 5-1, continuing their impressive run in the Copa del Rey.
From start to finish, Barcelona played dominant football, overwhelming Real Betis with relentless attacking pressure. With another big win, Barcelona advanced to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
At the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night, Barcelona won 5-1 in the Round of 16 of Spain’s second-tier competition.
In the first half, Gavi put Barcelona ahead, followed by a goal from Jules Koundé to double the lead. In the second half, goals from Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal completed the rout. Betis’ Vito Hock, on loan from Barcelona, scored a penalty late to reduce the deficit.
Although he didn’t score, Dani Olmo contributed two assists.
Barcelona scored five goals in consecutive matches, following their 5-2 win over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final last Sunday, which secured their first trophy of the season.
Before the Betis match, Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo raised the Super Cup trophy in front of the fans. Betis players also gave Barcelona a ‘guard of honor’ as they took the field.
In the third minute, Barcelona took the lead from their first opportunity. Olmo passed to Gavi in the box, who controlled the ball with his right foot and fired a shot into the net with his left foot.
After scoring, the 20-year-old Spanish midfielder did not celebrate, as he had originally come from Betis’ youth academy before joining Barcelona’s.
Barcelona could have doubled their lead in the ninth minute, but Betis’ goalkeeper saved a powerful shot from Olmo with a one-handed dive. In the 20th minute, Olmo’s shot hit the post.
With Robert Lewandowski on the bench, Barcelona dominated possession and attack. In the 27th minute, they extended their lead. Koundé found the net with a powerful volley after receiving a pass from Yamal.
In the four minutes of added time in the first half, Betis’ Vito Hock had a close-range shot, but Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Peña made a one-handed save to keep the score 1-0. Shortly after, Koundé thought he had scored again, but the referee ruled it offside with the help of VAR, as his foot was slightly ahead of the line.
In the 55th minute, Yamal found the net with a right-foot shot from a Frankie de Jong cross, but VAR disallowed the goal for offside. Shortly after the restart, Raphinha increased Barcelona’s lead to 3-0.
Yamal took control of the ball from his half, evading several challenges before losing control in front of the box. Raphinha, however, received the ball and scored with a left-foot shot. With 20 goals and 10 assists in 28 matches across all competitions, the Brazilian forward has been in excellent form this season.
In the 64th minute, Ferran Torres made it 4-0, scoring just two minutes after coming on to replace Raphinha. Olmo assisted, and Torres struck a powerful right-foot shot into the net.
In the 75th minute, Yamal added another goal, capitalizing on a pass from Fermín López. Initially flagged for offside, the decision was overturned by VAR, confirming the goal for the 17-year-old winger.
With six minutes remaining in regular time, Hock converted a penalty to make it 5-1. Barcelona’s Koundé fouled Jesús Rodríguez in the box, leading to the penalty.
There was no further significant action before the referee blew the final whistle after 90 minutes.
