Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo has signed a new contract with Barcelona, extending his stay at the Catalan club until 2031.
Araujo’s previous contract with Barcelona was set to expire in 2026, but with the new deal, it has been extended for another five years.
There had been much speculation surrounding Araujo’s future, especially after he had been sidelined due to injury for a significant period. Media reports mentioned interest from several clubs, including Juventus. However, the Barcelona co-captain has committed to staying at Camp Nou for a longer time.
Barcelona officially announced Araujo’s new contract on Thursday.
Araujo had missed the first half of the season due to a hamstring injury sustained during the recent Copa América. During his absence, young Pau Cubarsi and veteran Inigo Martínez stepped in to handle Barcelona’s defense.
With Martínez injured, Araujo returned to the starting lineup, playing in four of the last six matches for Barcelona.
Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguay’s Boston River in 2018. Since then, he has played over 150 matches for the club, playing a key role in their La Liga title victory during the 2022-23 season.
