Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo suffered a fresh injury and could be sidelined for around three weeks.
The 25-year-old picked up the injury during Barcelona’s emphatic 4-1 win against Sevilla on Sunday. In the 16th minute, he landed awkwardly after a challenge from an opponent and was unable to continue.
TV cameras later showed Araujo sitting on the bench with ice wrapped around his ankle. Further medical tests will determine the severity of his injury.
According to Spanish media reports, Araujo has twisted his ankle, and his recovery could take up to three weeks.
This would be a major setback for Barcelona, as losing one of their key defenders at such a crucial stage of the season could be costly.
If ruled out, Araujo is expected to miss La Liga fixtures against Rayo Vallecano, Osasuna, and Real Sociedad. He is also doubtful for the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final.
However, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick remains optimistic about the situation. After the match, he said, “We have to wait until tomorrow to assess Araujo’s condition. It doesn’t seem to be a serious injury.”
If Araujo is sidelined, Spanish defender Iñigo Martínez could return to the starting lineup.
