Atlético Madrid will face Barcelona, while Real Madrid will take on Real Sociedad in the battle for a place in the Copa del Rey final.
The semifinal draw, held on Wednesday, has set up an exciting matchup between an in-form Atlético and Barcelona, while Real Madrid will meet Sociedad in the other tie. With Barça and Madrid placed in separate fixtures, a potential El Clásico final is now on the cards.
Unlike the previous rounds, which were single-leg ties, the semifinals will be played over two legs.
Later this month, Barcelona will travel to Atlético for the first leg, with the return match in Madrid scheduled for early April. This means the two sides will face each other three times in just over a month, including their La Liga clash on March 16 at Atlético’s home ground.
The two clubs have already met once this season, with Atlético securing a 2-1 victory at Barcelona’s home ground last December in La Liga.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid will play the first leg away at Sociedad in late February before hosting the return leg at the Bernabéu in early April. These two teams have also met once in La Liga this season, with Madrid winning 2-0 at Sociedad’s home in September.
For the first time since 2014, the league’s top three teams have made it to the Copa del Rey semifinals. The title race is extremely close, with just two points separating the top three.
After 23 rounds, Real Madrid leads the league table with 50 points, Atlético Madrid sits second with 49, and Barcelona is third with 48. Real Sociedad, however, is further behind, currently in seventh place with 31 points.
