Everton 2 – 2 Liverpool
The Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park ended just as history dictated—with an even record of wins and losses remaining unchanged.
It was a thrilling contest, and Liverpool came agonizingly close to victory. With mere seconds left on the clock, the match took a dramatic turn. A stunning late goal saw Everton snatch a point, turning the moment into an unforgettable one.
This was the last Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park before Everton move to their new stadium. The historic ground witnessed a 2-2 draw on Wednesday in what was an intense Premier League battle.
Everton took the lead through Beto, only for Alexis Mac Allister to equalize shortly after. Mohamed Salah’s second-half goal put Liverpool in the driver’s seat, but in stoppage time, James Tarkowski’s late strike rescued a point for the hosts.
This result means Liverpool have now gone two games without a win in all competitions. Last week, they suffered an FA Cup exit against Plymouth, and now, despite leading late in the game, they couldn’t secure three points.
However, Liverpool still made some progress in their title chase. With 57 points from 24 matches (17 wins, 6 draws), they remain top of the table, seven points ahead of Arsenal.
Last season, Everton had beaten Liverpool 2-0 at Goodison Park, with Jarrad Branthwaite playing a crucial role. This time, the English defender was instrumental again, setting up the opening goal.
In the 11th minute, Branthwaite delivered a precise through ball from a free kick, and Beto made no mistake, slotting past the goalkeeper with a sharp finish.
Everton’s lead, however, was short-lived. Just five minutes later, Salah sent in a cross from the right, and Mac Allister met it with a perfectly timed header to level the score.
Liverpool had a golden opportunity to take the lead just before halftime. Dominik Szoboszlai’s low shot was brilliantly saved, and despite a loose ball falling to Luis Díaz, he failed to capitalize.
Everton started the second half strongly and had a clear chance in the 53rd minute. Abdoulaye Doucouré found himself unmarked in the box but sent his header off target.
After soaking up Everton’s pressure, Liverpool finally got their chance in the 73rd minute—and they took it. Curtis Jones’ shot was blocked, but the rebound fell kindly for Salah, who smashed it into the net.
The Egyptian forward has now scored eight Merseyside Derby goals, four of them at Goodison Park. This was also his 22nd Premier League goal of the season, putting him three behind Erling Haaland.
With two minutes remaining, Salah had a golden chance to seal the win, but his thunderous strike was denied by an excellent save.
Then came the game-changing moment. In the dying seconds of stoppage time, Everton launched one final attack. A headed pass found Tarkowski, who fired a powerful shot into the net, sending Goodison Park into wild celebrations.
The drama wasn’t over. In the chaos that followed, fans stormed the pitch, tempers flared, and the referee had to step in. Doucouré was sent off for a second yellow, while Liverpool’s coach Arne Slot received a straight red card. Later, Curtis Jones was also dismissed.
This dramatic finish was a fitting farewell to Goodison Park’s 120-year history of hosting Merseyside Derbies. In 120 meetings here, both teams have now won 41 times each.
The goal tally is just as close—Everton have scored 143 goals, while Liverpool have netted 149.
Despite this spirited performance, Everton remain 15th in the league with 27 points from 24 games, while Liverpool continue their title charge at the top.
