Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national football team, explained the reasons behind Kylian Mbappé’s absence from the squad in October and November.
Mbappé’s absence from the national team during the latter part of last year sparked considerable discussion. However, as the international football season approaches, Deschamps put an end to the speculation, confirming that Mbappé will be part of the France squad for the upcoming March matches.
Mbappé has already played 86 matches for France and has tasted World Cup glory at a young age. He played a crucial role in their journey to the final in the last World Cup. Yet, he was left out of the squad for the UEFA Nations League matches in October and November.
France will face Croatia in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals next month, but Deschamps has yet to announce the squad for these matches. However, in an interview published by French sports newspaper L’Équipe on Friday, Deschamps confirmed that Mbappé will be in the squad.
“Of course, he will be part of the team. Why wouldn’t he be? Yes, there were specific reasons (for his absence in the last two squads), but unless something unforeseen happens, he will be in the squad next month,” Deschamps said.
“He’s been through a difficult time in his personal life and career, but he’s still an integral part of the France team. He’s fully regained his fitness, and you can see that on the field. His thoughts on everything are also now clear.”
Deschamps further explained the reasons behind leaving Mbappé out of the previous international breaks. He specifically mentioned Mbappé’s summer move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid, noting that the adjustment period to his new surroundings was one of the key factors in not including him in the squad.
“A bit of rest, limited preparation, six tough months in Paris, back pain, a broken nose at the Euros – all of these things undoubtedly affected his body and mind, and the transition to Madrid played a part as well,” Deschamps explained.
“It took some time, but everything is in place now because he’s done everything necessary.”
