The National Sports Council (NSC) has issued a directive to rename the stadium, officially announcing the change on Saturday.
A gazette notification signed by NSC Secretary Md. Aminul Islam was released, stating:
“In light of the above matter, all concerned are hereby informed that the naming of the following sports facility, constructed by the National Sports Council, has been officially determined as follows.”
According to the notification, the Bangabandhu National Stadium will now be known as the National Stadium, Dhaka. Copies of the directive have been sent to the NSC project director, the stadium administrator, the Bangladesh Football Federation, and the Bangladesh Olympic Association.
Originally built in 1954, the stadium has undergone several name changes over the years, being known at different times as Dhaka Stadium and Dhaka National Stadium. In 1996, a proposal was made to rename it Bangabandhu National Stadium, which received final approval in 1998.
