Manchester City 4 – 0 Newcastle United
Manchester City returned to form with a dominant performance against Newcastle United, showing signs of getting back on track under Pep Guardiola.
After two frustrating defeats, City bounced back in style, led by new signing Omar Marmoush, who delivered a stunning hat-trick. The emphatic win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday saw City thrash Newcastle 4-0, with James McAtee adding a late fourth goal after coming on as a substitute.
City Bounces Back After Arsenal & Real Madrid Defeats
City had suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat to Arsenal in their last league game and a disappointing 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League after conceding two late goals. Guardiola made six changes to his starting lineup from the Madrid match, benching experienced midfielders Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.
With Phil Foden and Ilkay Gündogan back in the lineup, City dominated possession from the start. However, despite having nearly 90% possession in the opening 15 minutes, they failed to register a single shot.
Marmoush’s Instant Impact
That changed when Marmoush, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt for €75 million last month, took center stage. The Egyptian forward scored his first City goal in the 19th minute and completed a hat-trick within 13 minutes.
His first goal came from an unexpected assist by goalkeeper Ederson. Spotting Newcastle’s defense pushed high up, Ederson launched a long ball forward. Kieran Trippier misjudged his header, allowing Marmoush to chase it down and lob the ball over the advancing goalkeeper into the net.
This assist made Ederson the most prolific goalkeeper in Premier League history, with six career assists, surpassing Paul Robinson’s previous record of five.
Just five minutes later, Marmoush struck again. Gündogan’s pass from the left found him in space, and his powerful shot took a slight deflection off Trippier before nestling into the net.
In the 33rd minute, Sávio set him up inside the box, and Marmoush smashed a shot past the goalkeeper to complete his first career hat-trick. The 26-year-old had scored 20 goals for Frankfurt earlier this season but had gone four matches without scoring for City before this breakthrough.
City Seals the Win
Newcastle struggled to create chances, managing only two off-target shots in the first half. Their first real attempt on goal came in the 60th minute when midfielder Lewis Miley forced a save from Ederson.
In the 76th minute, Guardiola substituted both Marmoush and Foden. Eight minutes later, McAtee extended City’s lead, pouncing on Erling Haaland’s header from a corner to make it 4-0.
League Standings After the Matchday
Arsenal, who secured a 2-0 win against Leicester earlier in the day, remains second with 53 points from 25 matches. Liverpool leads the table with 57 points from one game fewer.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest suffered a 2-1 defeat at Fulham, keeping them in third place with 47 points. Fulham, now with 39 points, moved up to eighth.
Despite City’s win, they remain fourth with 44 points from 25 matches—still 13 points behind leaders Liverpool.
