Fourth-tier side Briochin has already knocked two Ligue 1 teams out of the French Cup.
With a crucial Champions League clash against Liverpool coming up next week, PSG could have been tempted to shift their focus. But for now, coach Luis Enrique is fully concentrated on the French Cup quarter-finals and their opponent—Briochin, the giant-killer that has already eliminated two top-flight teams.
In this season’s French Cup, Briochin stunned Ligue 1 sides Nice and Le Havre. Even PSG had a tough time in the Round of 32, struggling against fifth-tier side Revel. That match was level at 2-2 until the 87th minute, before Enrique’s men sealed a 4-2 win with two late goals.
PSG will travel to Briochin’s home ground on Wednesday for a place in the semi-finals. Despite the clear difference in squad strength, Enrique is not taking the underdogs lightly.
“If you look at the other Ligue 1 teams, more than half of them have already been eliminated. We had to fight hard in both the Revel and Le Mans matches, especially against Revel,” Enrique said.
“In football, we often see underdogs rise to the occasion. Sometimes, a team can win a match even without playing attacking football.”
PSG remains unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season, sitting comfortably at the top with a 13-point lead over second-placed Marseille after 23 rounds.
Before their showdown with Liverpool, PSG will also face Lille in the league—a demanding schedule that leaves no room for complacency.
