Manchester United 1 – 1 (PEN 3 – 4) Fulham
Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno was the hero of the night, saving two penalties as his side stunned FA Cup holders Manchester United with a 4-3 shootout victory. The dramatic fifth-round clash at Old Trafford had ended 1-1 after extra time, sending Fulham into the quarter-finals.
The game was forced into penalties after Bruno Fernandes’ second-half equalizer canceled out Calvin Bassey’s first-half stoppage-time opener for Fulham.
With the shootout poised on a knife’s edge, Leno denied Victor Lindelöf before Joshua Zirkzee, needing to score to keep United alive, fired his effort straight at the keeper—sparking wild celebrations from the Fulham players.
Raúl Jiménez, Sander Berge, Willian, and Antonee Robinson all converted their penalties for Fulham, setting up a quarter-final clash with Crystal Palace.
Fulham struck first just before halftime when Andreas Pereira’s corner caught United’s defense flat-footed. Rodrigo Muniz nodded the ball on, allowing Bassey to head home in his first-ever FA Cup appearance.
United responded in the 71st minute when Diogo Dalot cut the ball back from the left, setting up Fernandes. The captain unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the box, curling past two defenders and Leno into the far corner—forcing extra time.
“Unbelievable,” a smiling Leno told the BBC. “I think we deserved to win after 90 minutes. Of course, penalties are sometimes a lottery, and luckily we won. The goalie coach gave me some information, but my feeling is more important.
“I went the wrong way three times, but credit to our penalty takers—it’s not easy. Brilliant job from all of us.”
Manchester United, 13-time FA Cup winners, had beaten Manchester City in last year’s final but fell short this time. Manager Ruben Amorim’s side has struggled throughout the season, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, five places below Fulham.
“I think we had the best chances in the game,” Amorim said. “In the end, penalties can go either way, and today wasn’t our day.
“The goal is to win the Premier League,” he added. “I know we are losing games, but the goal remains the same. I don’t know how long it will take, but we continue forward no matter what.”
Both sides had their moments in an intense battle at Old Trafford. Late in normal time, United keeper André Onana made a diving save to deny Emile Smith Rowe.
In stoppage time, United had golden chances to snatch victory. Leno rushed out to block Alejandro Garnacho’s close-range shot, before 17-year-old Chido Obi first stabbed a shot just wide, then forced Leno into another diving save.
Fulham manager Marco Silva felt his team should have sealed the win in normal time.
“I think we were the best team on the pitch,” Silva said. “We dominated possession and deserved to go through.”
Fulham, whose only FA Cup final appearance came in 1975 when they lost 2-0 to West Ham, now have their sights set on a return to Wembley.
“Two years ago, we lost here in the quarter-finals,” Leno said. “Now we’re back in the last eight, and we want to go to Wembley—100%.”
