Manuel Neuer got a little too carried away while celebrating a goal—only to end up injured.
It was the perfect example of “joy turning into sorrow.” Overwhelmed with excitement, Neuer momentarily lost himself in the celebration. But in doing so, disaster struck. The euphoria of the moment quickly turned into pain.
During Bayern Munich’s Champions League match, the veteran goalkeeper picked up an injury while celebrating a goal. He had to leave the pitch, leaving Bayern uncertain about his availability for the next leg.
Bayern dominated their Round of 16 clash at home, securing a convincing 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Harry Kane opened the scoring with a header in the 9th minute and later converted a penalty in the 75th. In between, Jamal Musiala found the net in the 54th minute.
Neuer, however, got a little too caught up in the celebration. The 38-year-old suddenly sat down, clutching his leg. Despite receiving medical attention on the field, he couldn’t continue and had to be substituted. That gave 21-year-old goalkeeper Jonas Urbig his debut for Bayern.
After the match, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany provided an update but remained cautious.
“I don’t have any concrete news on Manuel at the moment. But yes, he picked up an injury while celebrating the goal. It seems to be in his calf muscle, but we need further assessment.”
Despite the big first-leg win, Kompany isn’t taking anything for granted.
“We’ve only completed half the journey—this match was just the first part. The second leg in Leverkusen will be just as important, and we need to approach it the same way.”
