The Serie A leaders remain in contention for both the Champions League and the Coppa Italia, strengthening their bid for a historic treble.
Inter Milan came dangerously close to a shocking defeat at home against Monza, a team far weaker on paper. Despite trailing early, they mounted an incredible comeback to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory. Now, the players are daring to dream of winning all three major titles this season.
Facing Serie A’s bottom-placed Monza at the San Siro on Saturday, Inter found themselves in trouble early. The defending champions conceded twice in the first half, raising fears of a major upset.
However, they didn’t lose their way. Just before halftime, Austrian forward Marko Arnautović pulled one back, giving Inter hope for a turnaround.
Inter increased the pressure in the second half, and it paid off. In the 64th minute, Turkish midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu equalized. Thirteen minutes later, an own goal from Monza sealed the win for Inter.
With this hard-fought victory, Inter further solidified their position at the top of the Serie A table. They now have 61 points from 28 matches, four points ahead of second-placed Napoli, who have played one game fewer.
Beyond the domestic league, Inter is also competing fiercely in the Champions League and Coppa Italia. They took a huge step toward the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-0 win at Feyenoord in the first leg of the Round of 16. Meanwhile, they will face AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-finals in April.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the dramatic comeback against Monza, Çalhanoğlu emphasized that the team is staying focused on their treble ambitions.
“We never underestimate any opponent—every team is strong. In the end, we showed our dominance, gave everything we had, and we are happy with the win.”
“The coach has the right mentality, and we will try to win the treble. It’s a long season, so we have to take it step by step.”
Marko Arnautović is one of the few players in the squad with experience of winning a treble at Inter—though his role was minimal. He was on loan at the club during their historic 2010 treble-winning season but made only three appearances.
For that reason, he doesn’t see it as his own achievement. However, he is determined to experience it properly this time.
“When Inter won their first treble, I was just a fan. I was part of the team, and I was proud to be there, but I don’t consider it my success because I only played two or three matches.”
“Now, I am here again. We know it won’t be easy, but we are trying to win everything. Against Monza, we were down 2-0 after 25 minutes, but we did our job, and the fans kept pushing us. We’re happy with the win, but the job is far from over—the championship is still a long way to go.”
Inter defender Yann Bisseck also believes they have what it takes to achieve another treble.
“It’s 100% possible. We are still in the race for all three titles. We just need to stay focused, take it step by step, and see how things unfold.”
