Getafe 2 – 1 Atlético Madrid
A stoppage-time stunner from Getafe shocked Diego Simeone’s men.
Atlético Madrid were on course for victory, eyeing the La Liga summit ahead of Barcelona. However, their hopes unraveled after Ángel Correa saw red, and Mauro Arambarri’s late brace crushed their ambitions.
Simeone’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat at Getafe on Sunday.
With 56 points from 27 matches, Atlético sit second, trailing Barcelona, who have 57 points with a game in hand. Barça’s clash against Osasuna was postponed following the sudden passing of their head doctor.
After a goalless first half, Atlético took the lead in the 75th minute through a penalty converted by Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth. The decision, awarded after a lengthy VAR review for handball, was met with strong protests from the hosts.
Just two minutes before full-time, Atlético suffered a major blow. Correa received a straight red card for a reckless foul, leaving his team a man down.
Moments after the restart, Uruguayan midfielder Arambarri equalized for Getafe.
Then, in the second minute of added time, Arambarri struck again to seal a dramatic victory, handing Atlético their first league defeat in six matches.
