Even after stumbling for the second consecutive match, Bayern Munich remains in a strong position to reclaim the Bundesliga title.
Naturally, frustration lingers among Bayern players and fans after failing to secure a win against Union Berlin despite creating multiple opportunities. However, coach Vincent Kompany has no complaints about his team’s performance.
Last week, Bayern suffered a shocking defeat at home to Bochum, despite leading by two goals. Looking to bounce back, the Bundesliga record champions dominated possession and attacked relentlessly against Berlin but ultimately had to settle for a draw.
After a goalless first half at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, German forward Leroy Sané put Bayern ahead. However, just eight minutes later, another German forward, Benedict Hollerbach, equalized for Union Berlin. Despite having plenty of time to regain the lead, Bayern struggled to break through Berlin’s resolute defense, and the match ended 1-1.
While Kompany expressed disappointment at not securing all three points, he remained largely positive—thanks to his team’s performance.
“This match had two different stories—the performance and the result. Of course, at the end of the day, when you don’t take three points, you feel disappointed. That’s simple.”
“But I’ve been in football for a long time, and I know that performances like this in an away match are not bad at all. For most of the game, we kept the opposition from creating real danger… In the end, credit to them because they fought hard. Sometimes when a team doesn’t score, it’s not just about strikers failing to convert chances—it’s also about strong defending and goalkeeping. And they (Union Berlin) did that well.”
Bayern controlled 80% of possession and registered 18 shots, four of which were on target. In contrast, the hosts managed just seven shots, with three on target. Bayern also won 14 corners—12 more than their opponents—but struggled to make them count.
Despite dropping points in back-to-back games, Bayern still leads the title race. They sit atop the Bundesliga with 62 points from 26 matches. Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, with a game in hand, trail in second place with 53 points.
Bayern may have stumbled, but they remain well-positioned to reclaim the title.
