Young right-back Wesley has joined the Brazil national team for the first time, determined to secure a permanent spot.
Five years ago, during the harsh days of the COVID-19 pandemic, 16-year-old Wesley was struggling with uncertainty. To support his family, he worked in a parking lot, assisting his mother and cleaning customers’ cars. His football dreams seemed distant. Yet today, that same teenager has turned his dream into reality, earning a place in the Brazil squad. Now, he eagerly awaits the chance to play against Colombia and Argentina.
At 21, Wesley is not a widely known name outside Brazil. However, after being named the country’s best right-back in 2024, interest in Flamengo’s rising star has been growing.
In an interview with Brazil Football Confederation TV, Wesley reflected on his emotions when he received his first call-up from coach Dorival Júnior.
“I must admit, I was very nervous. When I woke up and started getting ready, it felt like a movie playing in my head. I kept asking myself, ‘Is this real?’ This is a dream, and I can finally feel it. I’ve always wanted to wear this yellow jersey—it’s every player’s dream.”
He recalled his journey, leaving his hometown with just one goal: to wear the national team jersey.
“Playing for your country is the ultimate goal for any footballer. I was thinking about everything and told myself—I’ve come this far, but the hardest part is staying here. My whole life flashed before my eyes. Now that I’m here, I will do everything to remain.”
Before training, Wesley sat beside Real Madrid star Rodrygo, alongside Flamengo teammate Gerson, whom he sees as a father figure despite being only six years older. Another debutant, defender Léo Ortiz, was also present. Wesley had envisioned a moment like this for himself.
“I’m experiencing a fantastic time in my life. It’s not that I didn’t imagine this—I worked for it, so I always believed it would happen. Flamengo fans, and even supporters of other clubs, were calling for my national team selection. Seeing that left me speechless. I kept wondering, ‘Is this really happening?’ The thought stuck in my head, and I trained even harder for this moment. Finally, the call came.”
However, securing a spot in the starting XI won’t be easy. With eight defenders in the squad, Wesley faces tough competition. He is ready to prove himself with an open mind.
“I hope to showcase the same ability I display at Flamengo. I know this is a different level—it’s the national team, and many stars are here. I will follow Dorival’s instructions and do whatever he asks of me.”
For Wesley, playing in such big matches is not a burden but an honor.
“Everyone here deserves this opportunity. This isn’t pressure—these players are used to big games. I don’t know yet if I will get my chance, but let’s see.”
Brazil will face Colombia early Friday morning (Bangladesh time) before taking on Argentina five days later.
